Accidents
in Water
If your vehicle should run off the roadway, into water, try
escaping through a window by opening it slowly. Water pressure
will not allow you to open the door. If your vehicle should
begin to sink, climb into the back seat, where usually an
air pocket occurs. Take a deep breath, open the window slowly,
and escape by following the bubbles, which usually flow upward.
Right
of way
When two drivers arrive at an intersection at the same time,
the driver on the left must yield the right-of-way. On a divided
highway, do not enter an intersection, until the intersection
is clear.
Riding
on the bed of a Pick Up Truck
Riding in the bed of a pick up truck is never a good idea.
The chances of serious bodily injury or death are just too
great. Remember the bed of a pick up truck is for cargo. Humans
are not cargo.
Pull
over safety
If you are being pulled over by an unmarked vehicle and you
feel uncomfortable; slow your speed, turn on your four ways,
and drive slowly to a well lit area. When the officer approaches
you, ask to see his identification.
Power
line safety
If you're involved in a crash, where power lines are on your
vehicle, remain in your vehicle until help arrives. If a fire
is eminent, you must jump clear of the vehicle. Do not let
any part of your body touch the vehicle and the ground at
the same time.
Motorcycle
Safety
As summer time approaches, motorcycles become more widely
used. Remember, if you see one headlight, it may not be a
car, it may be a motorcycle.
Highway
Right-of-way
It is the law in Indiana to slow down or move over when in
the presence of law enforcement/emergency vehicles or highway
workers.
Following
too Closely
To avoid following a vehicle too closely, use the two second
rule. Pick out an object alongside the road, such as a tree,
sign, or overpass. As the vehicle in front of you passes that
object count as you did in school...one, one-thousand one,
one-thousand two. If you should pass that object, before you
get to one-thousand two, you're following too closely.
Blow
out
A thumping sound may be the sound of a blown out tire. If
this happens, tighten your grip on the steering wheel, ease
off the gas pedal, and pull slowly off the side of the road.
Then check your tires.
Summer
Safety
Summer time is for fun in the sun and relaxation. Don't get
in a hurry. Drive the speed limit and wear your seat belt.
